Application Process
The application process is handled by Boone County Human Resources. You may apply online, download a PDF application to fill out and mail, or apply in person at 613 East Ash in Columbia, MO.
If you live outside the Columbia, Missouri, area, typing tests may be taken at the nearest local employment security office. - Sheriff's Office Addendum
- Military Records Release
- Qualification Form (Deputy Sheriff and Detention Officers Only)

Testing and Interviews
The Boone County Sheriff's Office conducts regular testing and interviews. Testing is held Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but may be scheduled in the evening hours or on Saturdays as needed. Interviews will be scheduled as needed and will generally be conducted Monday through Friday.
Pre-Employment Selection Process
The Sheriff's Office's pre-employment selection process consists of the following elements:
- Criminal record review
- Written exam
- Initial interview
- Second interview
- Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) examination
- Background investigation
- Pre-employment drug screening
- Psychological screening
- Pre-employment physical examination
- Any other requirement determined necessary by the Sheriff's Office
This process generally takes five to eight weeks or longer to complete. Qualified applicants and employees are treated without regard to race, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, or disability.
