If you live outside the Columbia, Missouri, area, typing tests may be taken at the nearest local employment security office. Maintain law and order and serve legal process of the courts by performing duties, including but not limited to; processing citizen complaints, documenting and writing reports on law violations.

Enters and maintains warrants received, communicates with the public, assists with information requests, and serves as administrative and clerical support for the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

While working inside the Boone County Jail, the employee will assist in ensuring the safety and security of the facility, observe and document detainee movement and communicate with detainees.

While working primarily inside the Boone County Jail and interacting in a face-to-face manner with detainees, the employee assists in maintaining facility security.

This entry level position is required to attend POST training and gain POST peace officer licensure. Individual is eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff upon successful completion of a POST progm.

Updates and maintains job applications for posted positions and serves as administrative and clerical support for all steps of the selection process of the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

Testing and Interview Dates

Please note that testing and interview dates may be subject to change.


Testing is held most Mondays, starting at 5:00 PM. Interviews may be conducted the same night as testing.

Note: Monday testing and interview dates are for Detention Officer applicants only.


Testing is the 3rd Saturday of the month, starting at 9:00 AM. Interviews are conducted the 4th Saturday of the month, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Note: Saturday testing and interview dates are for Control Room Officer, Deputy Sheriff, and Deputy Sheriff Trainee applicants to establish an eligibility pool.

Pre-Employment Selection Process

The Sheriff's Department's pre-employment selection process consists of the following elements:

  • Criminal record review
  • Written exam
  • Initial interview
  • Second interview
  • Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) examination
  • Background investigation
  • Pre-employment drug screening
  • Psychological screening
  • Pre-employment physical examination
  • Any other requirement determined necessary by the Sheriff’s Department

This process generally takes five to eight weeks or longer to complete. Qualified applicants and employees are treated without regard to race, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, or disability.
